rock clubs and Antique Row, where an
awesome collection of nearly 100 antique
dealers offer currency, furniture, art, books
and pottery for the discerning collector.
Used books and discount shoe shops make
this a bargain-hunter’s paradise. Nightlife
includes The Gothic Theater, a grand
1920s Art Deco movie theater now
evolved into a world-class music center.
Lower Downtown
The “LoDo” neighborhood, restored and
renovated, has become one of the most
vibrant areas in Denver. Home to more
than 90 sports bars, restaurants, coffee
spots and brewpubs, LoDo brims with
Victorian architecture and galleries, as
well as design firms. Nearby Larimer
Square was the first revitalization of an
historic neighborhood, and now sparkles
from the strings of lights decorating the
entire block. Offering more than 26
shops and boutiques that carry fashion
lines from more than 200 designers, the
square provides the ultimate variety in
apparel selection. Jewelry, shoes,
eyewear, and even a doggie spa allow
for indulgent pampering by merchants
who are passionate about what they do.
Five Points
Barbeque spots, jazz and Black
American History make one of Denver’s
oldest neighborhoods appeal to
discerning Americana fans. Known as the
“Harlem of the West,” this culturally rich
area hosted jazz greats such as Billie
Holiday, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington.
Today, the music still thrills the many clubs
nestled amid Victorian homes, luxury lofts,
and new apartment complexes. Stay at
the Melbourne Hotel & Hostel, take in the
Black American West Museum, and visit
the Denver Brass or the Crossroads
Theater for a night of music. In between,
try local eateries that offer the best in
Caribbean, Barbeque, Catfish and Soul
Food found anywhere. The flagship store
of REI located on Platte Street is worth a
visit, and Thread Handmade
Consignment on 21st Street is crammed
full of funky clothing and jewelry from
local artists. Cira Boutique on 16th Street
offers affordable, well-made and
expensive-looking clothing, but their bag
and belt collection will revitalize any
wardrobe. If you have read Jack
Kerouac’s On the Road, a visit to Five
Points will make it come alive.
Capitol Hill
More than 70 night spots make this area
rock, and the shopping is an eclectic mix
that appeals to locals and visitors alike.
Check out 13 Avenue’s Pandora on the
Hill boutique for one-of-a-kind irresistible
gifts. Re-energize and escape technology
with your favorite java at retro Pablo’s
Coffee Shop on Pennsylvania, one of the
only coffee establishments in the country
without wi-fi. The Denver A-List, evaluator
of top establishments in the city, mentions
Capitol Hill Books on Colfax as the best
purveyor of a wide range of new and
used affordable reading materials.
Shoppers can access their online
database to search for tasty tomes and
order in person or by phone. Don’t miss
the Denver Botanic Gardens or the
Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative
Arts, two of Denver’s most interesting
attractions.
Art District on Santa Fe
If all the many other galleries in the city
didn’t satisfy your appetite for beauty and
stimulation, go to the Art District on Santa
Fe. The largest concentration of art
galleries in all of Colorado features more
than forty galleries, as well as shops and
restaurants. Each month, the owners open
their doors for the First Friday Art Walk to
display traditional, contemporary, and
emerging works of paint, sculpture,
photography, mixed media, graphic art,
and textiles. Collector’s Night is held
every third Friday of the month.
Stapleton and Northfield
You can’t miss The Shops at Northfield
Stapleton. Open-air shopping, dining, and
entertainment are anchored by Macy’s,
Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, JC Penney,
Target, Harkins Theatres 18, and the
Improv Comedy Club. More than 60
specialty shops and restaurants include 10
specialty food spots, 14 restaurants, 13
women’s apparel and shoe shops, as well
as a plethora of home furnishing, specialty,
and men’s wear shops that provide
unlimited choices in the area. Located
conveniently between the Denver Airport
and downtown Denver, this center of
commerce also has a fresh approach to
design, with pedestrian streets and
fountains creating a relaxed, outdoor
shopping experience.
